"The Wakefield Concert Band is our hometown Band! Since our humble beginnings in 1894, we are growing and thriving in our community! Last year, we invited our own SKHS Band students to participate WITH us at the Memorial Day ceremony after the parade, and thus, have started a tradition for the future, of encouraging our hometown music students to share music and learn, aside professional adult musicians and music lovers.
This is our inaugural SKHS scholarship, which will also continue to be a tradition for the future - to a deserving South Kingstown High School music student!"
President, Bridget Gilchrist
As the recipient of the 1st Annual Wakefield Concert Band Scholarship, Max Niro is also the recipient of the 2024 SKHS Leonard Bernstein Musicianship Award for his outstanding musical contributions to the large instrumental ensembles of concert band, jazz band, and orchestra. Additionally, Max has been featured in the award-winning SKHS Pit Orchestra, and was a 2024 member of the URI Honor Band. In all of our SKHS groups, Max has served as principal trumpet and soloist, and has demonstrated the highest degree of musical achievement.
"I can’t begin to thank you enough for this amazing scholarship that you’ve given me. From the bottom of my heart, it means so much to have been chosen for something as special as this. If not for music, I would not be exposed to opportunities such as this, so I would also like to dedicate this brand new scholarship to the role that music has played in my life. Music is what gives me meaning to life. And I truly don’t ever want to lose that same level of appreciation as I grow up." - Max Niro
